The user interface of the Abacus Keyword Assistant has been designed by an HCI expert for intuitive usability.   The Abacus Keyword Assistant conforms to the legal requirement for software to be accessible to people with disabilities.

As well as being flexible, the Abacus Keyword Assistant has built-in intelligence. It does not just remove and add characters rigidly. It senses your probable desired result from your actions, and formats your text accordingly.   For example, it's unlikely that you'll want a comma at the end of a paragraph followed by a blank line. So, it doesn't add one, even if you've added commas to other line ends. Try these typical tasks, and see the results...

Typical tasks   Mouse click operations are shown in ( ) parentheses and alternative short-cut keystroke combinations in < > angle brackets.
Maximize browser window to see images at full size, otherwise distortion may occur.

Typical task 1:
(Watch the video!)
Create a Google Adwords Ad Group from a few key words by combining them into new phrases.
Step 1 (see image)   Open the 'List Combiner' form: (Click 'Edit' tab) <Ctrl>+<I>. (Click 'Combine' option) <Alt>+<I>+<I>. (Click 'List Combiner' in "Use the List Combiner to create new words/phrases") <Tab>, <Enter>.
Step 2 (see image)   Type words or phrases appropriate for your business in the list feed boxes. <Tab> from each list feed box to each 'Include' checkbox; <Space> marks/unmarks the 'Include' checkbox. Marking or unmarking an 'Include' checkbox produces different result lists. Experiment to get the desired results.
Step 3 (see image)   Combine the words or phrases in the list feed boxes into a single list: (Click 'Process >>') <Alt>+<P>. The results list appears in 'Combined phrases'.
Step 4 (see image)   Select and delete any unsuitable combined phrases.
Step 5 (see image)   Copy entire results list to 'Text after processing' in the Keyword Assistant: (Click 'Text after processing' option) <Alt>+<G>; (Click 'Copy') <Alt>+<C>.
Step 6 (see image)   Return to the Keyword Assistant: (Click 'Keyword Assistant') <Alt>+<K>.
Step 7 (see image)   Transfer all text to 'Text to be processed': (Click '<< Transfer') <Alt>+<T>. Select the 'Replace' option: (Click 'Replace') <Alt>+<R>.
Step 8 (see image)   Type a word/phrase to be replaced in the upper textbox. <Tab> to the lower textbox and type its replacement text. (Click the 'Append' checkbox for 'Text after processing') <Alt>+<A>. Newly processed text will be appended to text already in 'Text after processing' instead of replacing it.
Tip:
Because the <Tab> key moves the focus to the next control on the form, you cannot use it to to type the <Tab> character in the textbox. You must paste the <Tab> character into the textbox after copying it to the Windows Clipboard.
Step 9 (see image)   Replace the specified text in 'Text to be processed' and append it to the text in 'Text after processing': (Click 'Process >>') <Alt>+<P>. The entire list in 'Text to be processed' is appended to the text in 'Text after processing'. All the lines in the appended list containing the word/phrase to be replaced now contain the replacement word/phrase.
Taking task 1 further:
(Watch the video!)
Create new phrases by forming the plural of singular words.
Step 10 (see image)   Transfer all text to 'Text to be processed': (Click '<< Transfer') <Alt>+<T>. Select the 'Pluralize' option: (Click 'Pluralize') <Alt>+<Z>. Type a word/phrase to be replaced in the upper textbox. <Tab> to the lower textbox and type its replacement. Process the operation: ('Process >>') <Alt>+<P>. Unlike 'Replace', which only replaces text, 'Pluralize' seeks the lines containing the word/phrase to be replaced, and slots the new lines containing the replacement word/phrase into order next to the original lines.
Tip:
To form plurals of all words quickly and add them to the list, select 'Pluralize' and type only a Line-Feed <Enter> into the upper textbox. <Tab> to the lower textbox and type the letter "s" followed by a Line-Feed <Enter>. Click 'Process >>'. Then, if any of the plural words ending in "s" is misspelled, use the 'Replace' option to coorect them.
Going further still:
(Watch the video!)
Grouping for the Google AdWords pay-per-click advertising campaign. (One of the most valuable functions of the Abacus Keyword Assistant for creating Google AdWords Ad Groups quickly.)
Step 11 (see image)   Transfer all text to 'Text to be processed': (Click '<< Transfer') <Alt>+<T>. Select the 'Group by' option: (Click 'Group by') <Alt>+<Y>. Type words/phrases for the Ad Groups in the upper textbox. Unmark the 'Append' checkbox for 'Text after processing' if it is still marked: (Click the 'Append' checkbox for 'Text after processing') <Alt>+<A>. Process the operation: (Click 'Process >>') <Alt>+<P>. The list is now grouped according to the words/phrases typed in the upper textbox. The order and number of words/phrases to group by affect the results list if the 'Duplicates' checkbox is marked to suppress duplicates. Unmark the 'Duplicates' checkbox to get all the keyword phrases for each group.
Refine even more:
(Watch the video!)
Tight grouping for finely targeted ad campaigns.
Step 12 (see image)   Select 'Selected text' for 'Text after processing': (Click 'Selected text' for 'Text after processing') <Alt>+<E>). Select the already grouped lines you want to refine as a more tightly targeted Ad Group.
Step 13 (see image)   Select 'Work area' as the 'Copy to' destination: (Click 'Work area') <Tab> <Tab> <Tab> <Down arrow>. Copy the selected text to the Manual Work Area: (Click 'Copy to') <Alt>+<C>.
Step 14 (see image)   Open the 'Manual Work Area' form: (Click 'Manual work area') <Alt>+<W>.
Step 15 (see image)   If you have a complex campaign, you can build several groups at once by leaving the 'Append' checkbox marked in the Manual Work Area, selecting more text in the Keyword Assistant, and clicking ('Copy to') <Alt>+<C>. Alternatively, you can save each Ad Group to a file, and leave the 'Append' checkbox unmarked. Then your selected text will replace the contents of the Manual Work Area each time.
Printing   For a hard-copy record of your ad campaigns, you can print the text in any of the textboxes in the Abacus Keyword Assistant.

Step 5 (see image)   Process the operation: (Click 'Process >>') <Alt>+<P>. The entire list in 'Text to be processed' is appended to the text in 'Text after processing'. All the lines in the appended list containing the word/phrase to be replaced now contain the replacement word/phrase.
Step 6 (see image)   Transfer all text to 'Text to be processed', ready to format, for example, as from Task 3 Step 4: (Click '<< Transfer') <Alt>+<T>. In addition, you can save the 'Text after processing' to a file: (Click 'Save' for 'Text after processing') <Ctrl>+<S>.

Typical task 3: Create a Google Adwords Ad Group, using a keyword list for "broad match", "phrase match" and "exact match", to achieve maximum searchability.
Step 1 (see image)   Use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool to get keyword ideas and generate a list.
Step 2 (see image)   Edit the list as needed. Copy & paste the list into 'Text to be processed'. Or open a previously saved file (Click menu item 'File > Open') <Ctrl>+<O>.
Step 3 (see image)   Process the operation: (Click 'Process >>') <Alt>+<P>. The same list appears temporarily in 'Text after processing'.
Step 4 (see image)   Surround each line in 'Text to be processed' by Quotes, while preserving the line breaks, and append them to the original list currently in 'Text after processing': (Click the 'New lines' option in the 'Remove' section of the 'Format' tab) <Alt>+<R>, <Down> arrow, and (click the 'Line breaks' checkbox to mark it) <Alt>+<L>; (Click the 'Append' checkbox for 'Text after processing') <Alt>+<A>, and (click the 'Add Quotes' checkbox to mark it) <Alt>+<Q>; Process the operation: (Click 'Process >>') <Alt>+<P>. Step 5 (see image)   Do the same for the Brackets: (Click the 'Add Brackets' checkbox) <Alt>+<B>. Process the operation: (Click 'Process >>') <Alt>+<P>. Each line is surrounded by Brackets, while preserving the line breaks, and is appended to the growing list.
Step 6 (see image)   Copy the text in 'Text after processing' to the Clipboard: (Click the 'Clipboard' option to select it), and (click 'Copy to') <Alt>+<C>. Paste the formatted keyword list into your Google Adwords Ad Group. Repeat these steps for other Ad Groups.
Refine even more:   Setting various CPCs and destination URLs for keywords in finely tuned ad campaigns. (Another valuable function, unique to the Abacus Keyword Assistant, which saves countless hours of tedium.)
Steps 1 & 2   As above in task 3.
Step 3 (see image)   Click the 'Bid' tab: <Ctrl>+<B>. Type the URL where the destination files are/will be located into 'Domain URL'. If "http" is missing, "http://" will be added automatically. <Tab> to each textbox, and type the amount (without currency symbol) of your maximum bid for each type of match and for the number of words in phrases. Competition is less for more precise matches and for longer keyword phrases; so, lower bids could be used. Clear the checkboxes of the criteria to be ignored in the resulting list. Ensure that the file extension of the destination files is correct in 'File extension'.
Step 4 (see image)   Process the operation: (Click 'Process >>') <Alt>+<P>. A list of file URLs appears in 'Text after processing'. The amounts for 'Match type' and 'Keyword phrase' are added together for each combination. Edit individual amounts here for the very finest tweaking.
Step 5 (see image)   Copy the text in 'Text after processing' to the Clipboard: (Click the 'Clipboard' option to select it), and (click 'Copy to') <Alt>+<C>. Paste the formatted keyword list into your Google Adwords Ad Group.
Step 6 (see image)   Repeat these steps for other Ad Groups. Alternatively, it may be easier, if it is very long, to have your entire campaign list of keyword phrases in 'Text to be processed', and to select the lines to be processed, group by group. If you do this, ensure that 'Text to be processed: Selected text' is marked.

Miscellaneous   'Keyword Pad' button. Opens an external program, not written by Abacus Data Systems. It is included with the Keyword Assistant to perform some useful functions, such as removing unwanted leading/trailing spaces, creating misspelled words, converting text to lower/upper/capital case, highlighting, etc. The inclusion of this program not only relieves Abacus of extra programming effort, but it gives users the opportunity to compare the quality of an Abacus product with that of another company's. Of all similar products available — and there are surprisingly few — the Abacus Keyword Assistant is the only search keyword tool (we know of) that processes free text. Others process lists of uneditable lines. Although such lists make the programmer's job much easier, they reduce the flexibility for word/phrase manipulation from a user's viewpoint. This is one of many reasons why the Abacus Keyword Assistant is special, and favoured by professionals.
